In plain English

CPI year-over-year is how much a basket of US consumer prices rose versus 12 months ago. It is the inflation print still used in everyday Fed talk.

2% is the informal target neighborhood. Rising is hotter inflation; falling is disinflation (prices still up, just slower). Headline includes food and energy. This is not core CPI and not PCE.

Math and metrics

FRED CPIAUCSL (index, SA monthly). Collector converts levels to YoY. Matcher looks back 365.25 days with ~50 days of slop so monthly prints pair.

YoY_t = (CPI_t / CPI_{t−1y} − 1)·100.
