Instead of dollars, this prices one bitcoin in ounces of gold. When the line rises, bitcoin is beating gold. When it falls, gold is catching up or bitcoin is selling off in metal terms.
The lower pane is a 52-week report card: how many standard deviations the ratio sits from its own last year. High z means rich versus the last 52 weeks, not versus all of history.
